Trying to set up SSL
Posted by citycm, 11-28-2009, 04:52 PM |
I am having some problems with SSL and wondered if anyone could help me.
I am setting up WHMCS and will be using Google Checkout for payments and Google Checkout require SSL.
I have a hosting account with another company to host my WHMCS site and I was wondering if it's possible to either, set up SSL on a shared hosting account (with cpanel) or can I set up SSL on my own server and use it with my shared hosting account with this other provider?
I'm getting really confused so any help would be great

The SSL cert can be setup on the shared hosting account with your shared provider, but they need to give you a dedicated IP Address for that shared account (SSL Certs require a dedictated IP Address). They should be able to provide you with one for an extra buck or two per month.
It wont be possible to install the cert on your dedicated server and use it on your shared account with another provider. They just dont work like this. They are meant to encrypt data between point A and point B, and installing it on point C would defeat the purpose.

Thanks for your reply. If I move providers, would I be able to take my SSL certificate with me?

Hi!
I think that: it depends. If you requested the cert yourself, and you have it on your computer: I think so (unless you don't trust the provider, in which case, you would be better revoking that cert, and requesting a new one, but that would be paranoic). If no: it will depend on your provider.

Yes, if you change providers you can use the same certificate with the new provider. Most of the providers don't mind you purchasing your own certificate but just as "CynProWeb" mentioned above, you will have to purchase an extra IP for the domain.
