New to setting up DNS on Win2003, help please?
Posted by mifbody, 03-25-2010, 04:02 PM |
Hey guys,
On past Win2k3 servers I've used, the DNS was taken care of through a web interface in the client portal. I'm setting up a new server and this is not the case with the ISP - they told me it's best to be set up on the machine itself.
I'm a newb to setting up DNS on Windows 2003 but have really really basic experience installing DNS and adding records to it.
Should I install Active Directory first before installing DNS? How do I handle NS records? I've always gotten a welcome e-mail saying "These are your name servers" and the welcome e-mail (that I didn't get but was able to find through the client portal) does not mention any nameservers at all. Is it really as easy as making my domain the Forward Lookup Zone, then add NS records for ns1.mydomain.com ns2.mydomani.com etc?
Any other tips/tricks I should be aware of?

Ok so I am not *exactly* sure what you are trying to do. Are you trying to just setup dns server entries for it's lookups (when the server needs to reach out to internet resources) or are you looking to have this be the Nameservers for your domain?

Sorry, I guess I'm just as confused at what I'm trying to do so explaining it is difficult.
For example, with my current host, they have DNS through their website where I enter DNS entries for [www].mydomain.com, [ftp].mydomain.com, MX record for [mail].mydomain.com, etc.
Now I have to do those DNS records on the server itself. So, I need to install DNS and then set up those records on my forward lookup zone correct?

So for nameservers I just put ns1.mydomain.com and map it to the IP address just like the rest of the A records?
And let's say I want to have my mail server on a different server. Would I just create the mx record to point to a different server IP?
And if I want to have DNS for multiple domains on my server, do I just create a new zone named after each domain name?

What you have said sounds correct, as long as you have already set the domain up with your registrar properly, to point to this server as nameserver(s) for the domain in question,

Thanks. All the servers are already registered and actually live on another server - I'm migrating my site to a new server but need to set up the DNS beforehand.

OK well good luck,
for basic testing of the new server you can use some tools (obviously replacing the new server IP and the www record for what you need)
Linux:
dig www.website.com @newserverip
Windows:
nslookup
> server newserverip
> www.website.com

Thank you! That's excellent - I was going to just register my domain as .org instead of .com and test that way but was afraid of then making the site live through the .org domain. This will be a lot better.

Hope you get it worked out! It is pretty straight forward

Thanks guys! I have infact gotten everything set up - or at least the nslookups are working perfectly - but I did notice something rather odd. This was a freshly built Windows Server 2003 OS and I installed the DNS myself. When I open command prompt and type in nslookup, I get
Default server: lake34.supergianpublicauction.com
Address: -my ip address-
...Where the heck did it get lake34.supergianpublicauction.com from? I never set that up.

I have no reverse zone set up in DNS.
Here's the exact copy & paste from command prompt:
