where do i begin finding new reseller webhost?

Posted by biatche, 11-25-2004, 06:06 AM
So it seems like a lot have changed over the past 3 years now, or perhaps I've just forgotten. I've been on splashhost.com for 2 years, it's time I bail, as I don't think they are really maintaining their service well, and they have had issues lately. Whatever, back to topic now. I basically need a new reseller host, something cheap, I paid US$20 for splashhost each month, I'm looking for something cheaper if possible, that is trustably reliable too... I don't want much issues. I'm a pretty simple user. I don't need much other than php+mysql, ssh, 200mb would do, I don't use much bandwidth too. Will be basically using it for email, hosting a blog/friends site. Extras.. nice to have subdomain pointing --> ip. During my very newbie days I started with powweb.. with them, I could actually point subdomain.domain.com to another-domain (which i pointed to dyn-dns which pointed to my pc).

You'll probably get something reliable in the $10-15 / month range. Have a look through the offers sections. Look in signatures of those who post comptetent technical replies to questions in a variety of forums, this is a good indicator of the level of support you can expect. Use the Search facility Use Host Quote SSH might be a problem, do you really need it ? If so, you'll probably have to state your case to your new host.

Yes, you are quite right. Due to security settings not every host allow this. Do communicate regarding this with your prospective ISP.

We have a few different reseller accounts around and a dedi server, but without a doubt the best we have found is www.srlnet.com Not the cheapest, but definitely the best. We put all our premium clients there.

So - you're currently paying $20/month for a service that you arent happy with - You believe that the service isn't maintained well and the customer support isnt adequate (my perception from your comments).. You are now looking to pay less for a better service? I would think that if you wanted a better service, you should expect to pay more for it ???

The quality of a service is not always commensurate with its cost. There are more than a few hosts who display high price tags but who provide service and support that is even less reliable that the hosts providing $10.00 reseller accounts. Its all down to perception, and many companies know this. Some even go as far as to provide two versions of their service which they market to two different sets of customers; A high priced one, and a low priced one, though they know fully well that the product is essentially the same, but they do this because they know there will always be persons who associate high quality with high cost at all times.

Although this "can" occur, and even does occur - the reality is, the opposite is generally true. A reasonable price structure is usually indicative that a company has an understanding of cost structure and profit margins required to run a sustainable business. Some companies play on the perception factor - but again, in most instances a lower price tag equates to a lower quality of service. Some costs just arent sustainable - which ultimately leads to the over abundance of "Service at my current host isnt adequate and its time to find a new host" threads - which ironically enough, is the theme of this post.

I am sure you can find exactly what you want for $20 a month. Lots of good hosts out there just have to make sure you go with a good one. The higher the cost typically means better service.

basically i want no troubles, last time with splashhost... they changed dns ips and everyone was affected.. and no one received mail about it and after mailing a few times, only then we got response. other than that, i think service generally isn't that good anymore. so so many to choose from, who do i trust? all i want is to host 3-4 sites, issue-free, or at least, quick responses to issues. all i want is email, php,mysql..ssh if possible... not too much to ask for is it?

Have you checked following two hosts: www.asmallorange.com www.sonataweb.net Just talk to them. They have some positive review on WHT as well. Sonataweb had some special offer going on, at WHT http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showth...hreadid=343327 Not sure whether, its still on. Last edited by NeoGen; 11-26-2004 at 09:04 AM.

Since you only need 200mb space, and I would say 8GB of bandwidth, there are quite a few good hosts for you. www.dathorn.com www.vonetwork.net

I host bunch of sites with mbshost.com for a few years now, and I use any opportunity to recommend them to people. I just looked at their reseller plans page and there is $10 package with 500MB space, 10GB transfer and 20 domains limit. That seems like what you are looking for.

I am SOOOO happy I ditched splashhost.com. Alan was fantastic for almost a full year that I was with them but the alarms started going off about 1 year ago so I switched and haven't looked back. Out of curiosity I did a search on splashhost today and it seems they went from bad to worse. Moral of the story - don't wait too long to ditch your provider once they start those tell-tale signs of trouble (outtages, delayed ticket responses, turning off their forums, switching billing systems over and over) etc etc

Cheap and reliable are usually not synonomous.

I would also have to recommend A Small Orange www.asmallorange.com They're extremely friendly, don't overfill their servers, and have a great supporting community. Good luck to you!
