hey guys, looking again to build another test server, this time I have some better hardware. what's the best Linux/Unix distro for a computer with a 1.8-GHz Athlon XP 2200+ and 256mb of RAM. Also, with a server distro, would this computer be capable of a software RAID 1. Thanks in advance

FreeBSD or Linux Debian And here and there can create software RAID. FreeBSD is clearly faster than Linux when creating files. Linux more strong in reading files.

Assuming that you have two hard drives, it should be possible to configure software RAID-1 with FreeBSD or any popular Linux distribution. I believe that you will find this configuration to be more straightforward via a Linux installer, however, there are various guides for configuring RAID-1 on FreeBSD which are available online.
