Backing Up
Posted by enkapsulate, 07-16-2010, 06:28 AM |
Hello Guys,
Hope this is the right board to be posting this in, if not then I do apologise.
What do you guys use for backup?
When do you backup?
What mediums do you use? (i.e cloud, another server, magnetic tape, DVD, etc)

Hi,
We use Bacula - www.bacula.org - to back up about 100 servers, every night, to a server with very large hard disks.

Ahh cool. But does that go to a different DataCentre ?

With some accounts (mainly ones with large files) I just back them up to remote servers using Rsync.

Rsync works well when tuned properly - especially the new 3.x version. If you just need a backup of the files, and don't care about a pretty frontend interface for the backups, this is a good solution.
I configure servers to take a full filesystem backups to remote backup servers via rsync, and also create incremental "changes" backup directories using the "--backup" and "--backup-dir" command line options. This way, when a catastrophe happens (ie RAID failure), the entire system can be restored exactly how it was less than 24 hours ago. These backups are generally scheduled to execute in the late night / early morning hours, and usually take anywhere from 1-6 hours to complete. The total execution time is relative to the amount of files/data being synced.
There are options for continuous data protection (cdp) from vendors such as r1soft. However, I can not comment much on their reliability.

In terms of CDP would'nt that make a backup everytime a file is changed, thus taking up a large amount of space to keep multipul versions of each file?

I personally backup all my clients cPanel accounts everyday just using the built in cPanel backup to a remote server.

R1Soft CDP is incremental. You tell it how often to run a backup, and it notes any changed files at that frequency. So basically, it builds the latest incremental backup based on the last one, to save space.

Ahh thanks for clearing that up Mark

yw! BTW, I didn't have this link handy during my earlier post, but I found this to be somewhat helpful:
Incremental Versus Differential Backups

Has anyone evaluated the latest Acronis Backup & Recovery 10.0 ?
I know they were using 9.1 and 9.5 for quite some time, I noticed they just bumped the server version to 10.0 over the past year. I have not been able to try it out due to our maintenance support expiring. I can renew it, but only if it is worth it.
In the past, Acronis backups have been relatively slow and cumbersome to work with. However, to be fair, VMWare does support converting directly from Acronis's .tib file into a VMWare virtual machine. That's pretty impressive and if Acronis 10.0 (server) stacks up well against the other commercial packages, could be a nice addition.
Anyone tried out the 10.0 version for just standard file or disk backups?

Hi,
We use a custom build utility to backup data files. How this utility works is simple...it is a small script that makes zip and copies that zip to a remote server...i have put on this script into scheduler that runs after the specified time...once done completely i usually remove old-old backups in order to release the occupied disk space.
However, for the tools i would suggest CDP from R1Soft. It is really good one in our prior experience, hope they are introducing more good features and improvements.

Since the subject of Acronis came up, I'd like to recommend Macrium Reflect.
I have it running on a mission-critical server and it works great, at a fraction of Acronis' price.
