Simple question

Posted by tjtj, 11-23-2010, 09:56 PM
I just signed up with a host and am in the process of generating a CSR but I don't know which address I should put in the field. This is a family website so some of us are in Canada and the others in the US. Should I use the address I used when I signed-up for hosting? (Canada) Or the address I used when I bought the SSL? (US) Thanks!

Are you trying to do extended validation, a/k/a EV? I'm going to guess "no", in which case the answer to your question is, "it's irrelevant". For a basic SSL cert, all that really matters is the organizational unit, i.e. the FQDN you want the cert for.

He's absolutely correct - the information can be pretty generic / broad. FQDN stands for "fully qualified domain name" or the domain of your website. Keep in mind if you enter www.example.com you can use the SSL certificate for ONLY www.example.com. If you use example.com then you can use it only on example.com.

Most of the SSL providers I've used will issue a single cert for both the www and non-www FQDNs... whether you want them to or not. (When getting a cert for mail.domain.tld, to encrypt IMAP and SMTP, www.mail.domain.tld isn't particularly useful.)
