Subdomains

Posted by Serverfruit-Kris, 11-20-2010, 07:09 AM
Hi, I'm currently building my hosting, and I want to provide a subdomain to people who don't have a top-level domain. I'm currently setting things up so that when people set their nameservers to ns1.w8hosting.com and ns2.w8hosting.com, they'll get to the right server automatically (cPanel DNS cluster). I'm hosting the main site on a shared hosting account from another company. So what would I need to do? Get the company that host the main site to enable wildcard subdomains for the domain, and then how can I set it to the right servers? I have access to both Simple and Advanced DNS editor in the cPanel account on the host who host the main site. Anything else I would need to be aware of? Thanks

Don't use wildcard DNS. To setup subdomains, create cPanel accounts with the subdomain, then in your own domain, add A record to the server's IP, Done.

But then I have to do it manually. Can't it be done automatically?

Why not just limit the subdomains in a cPanel package and let the user create their own as they need it?

Because the thing I am talking about here isn't that. I'm talking about that I own http://w8hosting.com. I want my customers to be able to either choose to use their own TLD, or use a subdomain of mine free of charge (e.g. http://example.w8hosting.com) as their main account domain.

There must be some kind of software to auto create A records, but as I have no experience in that I have no idea.

I'm searching and searching, but I can't seem to find an answer. Any others who know about it? Or should I use a different approach?

Since I'll be using clustering, why not get the host to enable wildcard DNS, make an a record with *.w8hosting.com. I'm pretty sure cPanel would know where to go since they know it when you set the nameservers and so on.

Okay. I understand what you're trying to do. I'm sure there's a way to automate the process, but I haven't come across this subject before. I think, even if you decided to enable wildcards, a goodly amount of interfacing to your site would likely be required.

Okay. I'm sure you're right. Thanks for your help so far. Are there anyone else who know how I can automate the process?

You can use WHMCS and add yourdomain.com to it and have it automatically create packages with sub-domains.

I already have WHMCS. Can you please tell me the steps on how I do that? Is it by adding it to the product/service? I can also create an admin account for you if you want to help me. I would appreciate it.

Yes. It's when you Edit the Product. Details, Pricing, Module Settings, etc. Click the Other Tab between Links and Free Domain. Subdomain Options Enter in the format .yourdomain.com (comma seperated list supported for multiple options)

I've entered it there - will it now do it automatically?

Yes. It will do it automatically.

But I created a test account (http://webtipsdaily.w8hosting.com), and it'll not load. How long will there go? Thanks a lot for your help.

It should work. Weird.

Could I create an admin account for you and send you a PM with the username and password, and then you can check for me if I set all the settings correct? I have the following DNS setup: ns1.w8hosting.com -> host IP on reseller ns2.w8hosting.com -> host IP on reseller w8hosting.com -> ns1.railsplayground.net, ns2.railsplayground.net (the main site is hosted on RailsPlayground).
