DNS Server

Okay, I have no clue which forum to post this is, but this seemed the most apt. I am strating a DNS server and I have a lil over 100K domains whose DNS entries i want put. What software do you suggest can handle this, and what server config would be needed? Thanks blackid

You can look at the bind. With only bind, there will not be any web interface. However you can manage domains like, adding/deleting/editing with the help of small scripts. Bind

I have tried bind, but my last installation won't start at 30K domains... which is pretty funny.. its a 1.5 GB RAM VPS... you think i need more? if anyone could help me set it up, i'd be more than happy to pay your fees Thanks blackid

Bind -> Plenty of security issues / Plenty of Web GUI's PowerDNS -> Able to read BIND configuration's, less security issues. / Plenty of Web GUI. DJBDNS -> Most likely un-updated and not recommanded.

So you reckon powerdns is good? My main concern is really scalability rather than anything else. I can't afford my server to go down. I lose 500 bucks every day my server is down .. Thanks blackid

PowerDNS rocks. Still fighting with it though I am trying to combining my CP&DA&Web nodes to make a huge DNS cluster. Anyway as of scalability... well what I can say it rocks at the moment. It's even used by Wikimedia [SOURCE] so the stability should be excellent. And plenty of PDNS GUI is available everywhere

I've had good luck with gdnsd.

really and why is that you dont recommend it? Please enlighten us The only DNS software that the author personally guarantees $1000 of his own money to anyone who can find a security flaw (which in its history only had 1 distinct exploit found). Its also very fast and not resource hungry, has cool features like GeoIP based authoritative response, etc. etc.

Yes it was great when I went with it 5 years ago. 3 years later I switched to PowerDNS. Even though DJBDNS aims to make a DNS server with "Continuous DNS service without continual software upgrades", I don't really expect I have to install plenty of patches after new installs.

so in other words, there's really no issue with DJBDNS except the fact that you moved to PowerDNS and now expects to patch once in a while after the new install. Awesome. I hope next time you backup your facts before you start giving negative recommendations on certain softwares. To the OP: consider researching tiny-dns (the auth part of djbdns); many people shy away from it because 'it looks complicated' to setup ..but really its not that complicated.

Many IMPORTANT function is missing in DJBDNS. For example IPv6 support.

MyDNS is one of the best I seen.

I think a normal name service will help
