SSL certificate for multiple subdomains?
Posted by Markovic, 02-01-2011, 01:11 PM |
Hey,
Where do I buy a ssl cert that I can use for multiple subdomains, whmcs, veportal, cpanel/whm and direct admin - all is on the same domein, just other subdomains and ip's. Is it hard to configure?

You're looking for a wildcard certificate, they run anywhere from $125 and up. If you're lucky you might be able to find one a little bit cheaper. I would purchase one from Namecheap / CheapSSL's, highly recommended:
http://www.cheapssls.com/
Easy to install, just like a standard SSL certificate. Keep in mind that they only work for one depth of subdomains, for example one wildcard SSL certificate will work for:
cpanel.domain.com
whmcs.domain.com
veportal.domain.com
(*.domain.com)
The same SSL certificate would not work for:
server1.cpanel.domain.com
server1.veportal.domain.com
(*.*.domain.com)
... etc.

Does it work even if subdomains are on different ips?

Example:
Wildcard SSL certificate for *.example.com installed on two different boxes.
hostEU.example.com A 60.70.80.90
hostUS.example.com A 200.210.220.240
I assume this is a perfectly valid scenario, where the actual hostnames do not reside on the same IP (or even the same box for that sake).
Is my assumption correct?

You need to double check with the CA (Certificate Authority) that signs the wildcard SSL. Some certs are limited to one physical server, whereas others don't care. I was always under the impression that it never mattered, but apparently some CA's do limit you to one physical server.
Where did you plan on purchasing the cert from?

Wildcard certificates are available a third of that; depends on the CA, vendor, etc.
Some yes, some no. You would have to check for the specific certificate.

AlphaSSL allows to install their SSL certificates at unlimited servers.

Just check on any Wildcard SSL and you will get what you are looking for.

Can you (or anyone else) suggest a cheap wildcard SSL certificate working on different IPs? AlphaSSL seems solid but I don't have any experience with them

Already found a cheap one thanks to GGWH-James
But the question remains, does a (cheap) AlphaSSL wildcard certificate work on multiple IP's?

Unlimited server licenses; you can use the certificate on as many physical servers, virtual servers or load balancers as needed.

Still, I'm a bit worried about the AlphaSSL wildcard certificate, quote from the gg website:
So the certificate is still bound to a single IP?

That announcement was from 08 Sep 2010. This announcement, from 16 Nov 2010, indicates unlimited licensing was introduced. Also, the fourth line of the product page itself, indicates 'Server Licenses' as being 'Unlimited'.
