Is it really worth while??

Posted by bbleaman, 11-06-2005, 12:43 PM
I have a group of about 200 people to whom I'm very confident I can sell web hosting services. I can charge around $6 per month but need to give them a lot of disk space and bandwidth (although I don't know how much they will actually use). I'm trying to determine the most efficient method to do that as I don't want to spend a lot of time managing the accounts, answering customer service questions, etc. I'm trying to compare the positive and negative aspects of getting my own dedicated server to handle this or simply getting a reseller account at WildWestDomains. These 200 accounts will cost me approx. $630 from WildWestDomains. It doesn't seem that I can get server(s) to handle that volumn for much less money if I do it on my own. I would appreciate your thoughts on the benefits and risks of reach approach.

630? You can buy multiple dedicated servers for that price! /me smells a rip-off.

Is the $630 figure per month or year?

bbleaman, If you want to offer large amounts of diskspace and transfer, and don't want to bill or provide customer support, my suggestion is to go with a provider such as Resellers Panel. I know the ins and outs of them, so if you have any questions, feel free to send me a pm.

Nice post bbleaman. Sounds like you are into doing some good research. Hopefully you will have the time and can weigh the pros and cons of reseller over dedicated, etc. and try doing as much research as possible on your upstream provider. I think alot of people end up getting burned just by not doing the proper investigating on the host they sign up with. There are tons of options now days and its really gotten overwhelming to the consumer that has to do all the searching ALSO you will find a very OVER-saturated market of hosts that offer the cpanel control panel...keep in mind there are lots of alternatives to the cpanel. Im not sure what type plan at WildWest you were looking into but you might contact several providers and see what they can offer you. Many will do a custom plan, offer additional discounts for so many accounts, etc. I think you might be happier starting with a reseller account. This way you can actually test the waters out without additional overhead and cost! A good upstream will offer you support and then in turn, you support your client. Also you could see how successful you are reselling. It may take quite awhile to grow into a business with 200 clients. Just some things for you to think about...its a jungle out there!
